Jennifer Alton is a freelance book editor with over six years of experience in the publishing industry and a passion for literary fiction and genre-defying, curious nonfiction. Her acquisitions for Counterpoint Press have been named a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice, a Best Book of the Year by NPR and Time magazine, and longlisted for the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel.

She’s interested in literary fiction that combines innovative language with an energetic, character driven plot. She is always looking for deeply researched, story-forward nonfiction that can hold its own amid our frenetic news cycle.

I'm a writer and editor based in the Washington, D.C. area. I was the nonfiction editor of So to Speak journal for two years and have guest edited essays for Phoebe journal. In 2017 and 2018, I was an editorial intern at Tin House Books. In 2021, I received an MFA in creative writing from George Mason University, where I was the nonfiction fellow. I'm currently balancing writing and freelance editing with a 9-to-5 technical editing job. I'm looking to work on innovative books and short-form pieces, with a particular interest in hybrid/lyrical nonfiction writing.

My favorite books prioritize language and character over anything else. I’m a sucker for a good tale, but beautiful writing and a powerful style can put me in a state that nothing else can. My goal in editing is always to make sure the book feels like a coherent whole, that it never drags, and the story as a sequence of narrative events stays clear and well-paced without sacrificing style.

As for qualifications, I've done freelance novel and memoir editing for many authors as well as proofreading for Mysterious Press and American Mystery Classics, among others. I've also spent time doing reader reports for several agencies. I've also published five middle grade and young adult horror-adjacent novels and short stories in various magazines over the years.

Talk to me about your nonfiction of various stripes –– creative and hybrid works, memoir, projects about the natural world, cultural commentary, the technologies of contemporary life, essay collections, etc. Trade projects are great, as are books that walk the border between trade and academic. Or shoot me a message about your smart, voice-driven literary/upmarket fiction. In any genre, I am not afraid of the left-field or the unconventional just as I am comfortable with the straightforward.

My experience editing books largely comes from my tenure working as an editorial associate at a literary agency. There, I develop and edit nonfiction book proposals and fiction manuscripts which have gone on to sell both to big 5 houses and indie presses. Additional experience comes from freelance editing of fiction and nonfiction projects at various stages of development, usually working directly with authors. I have MPhil in Contemporary American Literature from the University of Cambridge, where I was an editor at Cambridge Review of Books.

I'm an editor based in Vancouver, interested in working on adult nonfiction manuscripts. In the summer, I'll be completing my Certificate in Publishing at Toronto Metropolitan University, where I've focused on copy, stylistic, and substantive editing. I have provided editorial services for a scholarly monograph, and I would be eager to work on writing with Big Ideas at the center. As a freelance culture writer, I am also strongly suited for works of cultural and sociological analysis. Even if your book doesn't seem to fall in any of these highlighted categories, please email me and tell me more about it!

Most of my experience is in editing creative nonfiction between 1,000 and 10,000 words, although I would consider larger projects, as well as fiction projects. I was the editor-in-chief of The Stranger from 2007-2016, during which time we won a Pulitzer Prize for a feature story I conceptualized, assigned, line-edited, and published. Two years later, we were a finalist for another Pulitzer Prize, that one in art criticism, for a group of essays by our art critic. I also have experience editing full manuscripts.

I have experience editing and assisting in improving a wide range of works. I've edited everything from Middle-Grade Fantasy to poetry. I’ve spent the majority of my college career editing my fellow student’s works, on a strict schedule with defined deadlines. I’ve even spent a semester as an assistant editor of the Brooklyn Rail. It’s where I learned how to copy edit and to curate a collection of works. I am looking for an entry level job that allows me to grow and learn as an editor.
